This post follows up our Newborn Essentials: Guide To Everything You Need post, where we listed all essentials needed for feeding time, bath time, diapering, and clothing essentials. In this post, we will be getting into why each type of clothing matters, and how much you should actually have on hand, especially when you just had a newborn! Just a heads up, babies actually outgrow their clothes super fast, but they also go through many outfit changes throughout the day, so the key is to find a balance.

1. Onesies

These are undeniably the most important kind of clothing you should get, as babies practically live in them. Onesies are extremely comfortable and the important kind to get would be those with snap-on closures for easier diaper changes. Having enveloped necks are also great in helping get over your baby’s head. Since these would pretty much make up most of the baby’s wardrobe, we recommend having at least 5 to 7 sets of onesies, with a mixture of long and short-sleeved ones.  Check out the wide range of cheeky slogan and personalized onesies we have at Diaper Cakes Singapore!

2. Nightwear

Another newborn clothing essentials would need jammies set aside specifically for nighttime. We recommend having at least 4 to 5 nighttime wear for your baby. Deciding between footed and non-footed onesies would be entirely up to your baby! Getting footed ones can keep your baby’s feet warm, and it takes away the hassle of putting socks on. Try to find nightwear that has two-way zippers to make it easier for diaper changes in the middle of the night. Another important thing to note would be to get those with zip protectors, which will protect the baby.

3. Tops and bottoms

While we don’t find getting tops and bottoms as important as onesies, these are great for dressing your baby up! The most important thing to note when shopping or getting baby clothes would be comforting for your baby. Ensure that the material is cotton and lightweight, to fit Singapore’s warm climate. If your baby has sensitive skin, get clothes that are made of 100% organic cotton. We also recommend avoiding getting clothes that have decorative beads, attachments, or strings that may cause discomfort. Since newborns do grow rather fast, we recommend sizing up for the “fancier” tops and bottoms, and only have about 2-3 newborn-sized ones.

4. Swaddles

Most newborns are wrapped in swaddling blankets in the hospital, and swaddling has a lot of benefits! For instance, it protects the baby from moving around too much (like flailing their arms and around and potentially harming themselves). Swaddling also provides them the “warmth” they used to have when they were in the womb and helps them while their body builds up their own warmth. Find swaddle blankets that are made from cotton or muslin as these materials are soft and comfortable enough for the newborn. Keeping 7 to 8 can be handy as these blankets are versatile and can be doubled up as burping cloths as well!

5. Hats

From the previous points, you can tell that newborns get cold easily. Babies tend to lose heat easily through their exposed heads (babies don’t come out of the womb with their heads full of hair!). This is probably why some hospitals put baby hats on for them. Having 3 to 4 baby hats for the baby can help alternate when some are in the wash. Do NOT keep the hats on when the baby sleeps, though, as it poses a choking hazard for them.

6. Socks and Mittens

Of course, these are not entirely necessary if you intend to have footed and mitted onesies. However, if you do get footless and mittenless onesies, you should, of course, keep socks and mittens around! Having about 3 to 4 pairs is sufficient to get you through washes and all.

The most important thing to remember is that it is okay to get bigger-sized clothing! Newborns really grow every day and usually outgrow the newborn clothes after a few weeks. It is always better to size up and keep the clothes for later use. Ensure that your newborn clothes are made of a soft and comfortable material, and easy to throw into the washer to avoid having to handwash or provide extra care, which will ultimately take up more time.

We hope this guide was helpful in helping you put together the checklist for all the newborn clothing essentials!
